MY REASON FOR CHOSING THE TOPIC
•The subject is a part of democracy, election and political structure of the state module in junior cycle.
•An excuse to talk about democracy, dictatorship, and political structure of the state.
•An opportunity to make young people aware that democracy, contrary to appearances, is not something given once and for all.
WHY ARE VOTING RIGHTS IMPORTANT
With voting rights, citizens have a say in the election of their representatives, who make decisions on their behalf.
Election will determine who will make the law and whose interests it will be represented.
The right to vote is a form of participation of the people in the exercise of state power.
Voters indirectly shape state policy.

Voting right overview
Although internationally known for its democratic ideals, the US continues to struggle with equality when it comes to the right to vote. Black Americans, Native Americans, and other historically marginalized groups continue to face voter suppression despite decades of activism and many steps forward.
Muslims who are Indian citizens have also been denied their voting rights. Missing Voters estimated that nearly 120 million citizens were missing from voter lists in the 2019 national election, more than half of whom were Muslims or lower-caste Dalits. Women were also disproportionately affected.
In 2007, Austrians gained the right to vote at the age of 16.
In Bolivia, non-voters can be fined, and even denied their salary if they cannot show proof of voting within three months after the election.
Discussion: Do you think voting right is:
OBLIGATION (is that contradicts the idea of freedom associated with democracy?)

YOUR “PROPERTY”

Voting right in Ireland
To vote in any election and referendum, you must be 18 years or over on the day of the vote and, be resident in Ireland and, be registered to vote.
Irish citizens who are resident outside the State do not have the right to vote at elections or at referendums held in the State, subject to a limited number of exceptions.
At present, only students who attended Trinity College and National University of Ireland or a member of a county or city council (a councillor) can vote for the six Seanad seats ( even if you are resident outside Ireland)

Key theorists in terms of voting rights
John Locke: He believed that all people have natural rights, including the right to vote. He argued that governments should be based on the consent of the governed, and that voting was a way for people to express their consent.
Jean-Jacques Rousseau: He believed that democracy was the best form of government, and that voting was essential to democracy. He argued that voting allowed people to express their general will, which was the collective will of the people
